Sennheiser’s best wireless headphones get a great free sound update
The Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless and Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 headphones will get a free update today – thanks to the Sennheiser Smart Control app firmware update for iOS and Android.
The new 4.3 update extends the personalization options for your Sennheiser headphones listening experience, helping you tailor the audio output to your personal preferences.
In particular, the Smart Control app gained an expanded equalizer (EQ) section for these two models, allowing you to more precisely adjust the visibility of certain frequencies to your ears. Where previously there were only three equalizer settings (Low, Mid and High) to adjust, now you’ll be able to take advantage of additional Low-mid and High-mid options for a total of five.
The interactive “Sound Personalization” mode is now also available, developed in cooperation with the Hearing, Speech and Sound Technology Department of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute of Digital Media Technology Fraunhofer.
This mode “intelligently calibrates a custom sound profile based on a sophisticated analysis of user responses against a series of reference sound samples” – by tracking your ear’s response, then tailoring the sound profile to whatever music, podcasts or calls your Sennheiser headphones receive.
In a press release, Sennheiser claims that “the latest update to the Smart Control app is the biggest yet [and] supercharges our latest Momentum series.”
Dr. Jan Rennies-Hochmuth, Head of the Personalized Hearing Systems group at IDMT, adds: “The unique thing about Sound Personalization is that it can accommodate differences in personal sound preferences that naturally occur due to different listening levels. […] As a result, the sound is optimally matched, regardless of the listening volume.
Gaining momentum
Quality of life updates are a key way to ensure buyers stick with their devices in the long run, helping to extend the life of a pair of headphones and gradually improving the user experience over time.
In our Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless review, we praised the comfort, detailed sound, and astonishing 60-hour battery life – making any tweaks to the EQ an added bonus to what is already one of the best over-the-ear headphones.
While it’s hard to replicate the same pitches in true wireless earbuds given their compact form factor, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless range generally does a great job of transposing high-quality audio and Hi-Res audio support into these earbuds. Considering they’re still relatively expensive for true wireless earbuds, any added functionality is welcome for those who paid full price.
