Dragon Age 4: trailers, news, and everything we know so far
Age of the Dragon 4 is another major entry in the beloved fantasy RPG series. Despite being announced back in 2018, little has been revealed about the game.
First, we don’t have a release date or even a wide release window Age of the Dragon 4. It will be called Dragon Age: Direwolf when it comes out and we know that Solas will be the game’s antagonist.
It is likely that BioWare plans to reveal more information about this Dragon Age: Direwolf in the coming months. Hopefully there will be some updates this summer, perhaps the main games in one fell swoop. So far, here’s everything we know about the game so far.
Dragon Age 4: get to the point
- What is this? The fourth installment of the Dragon Age RPG series
- What can I play it on? TBC (probably Xbox Series X, PS5 and PC)
- When can I play it? TBC (late 2023 or later seems most likely)
Dragon Age 4: Dreadwolf release date and platforms
Despite the fact that the development of the game has long been an open secret, Age of the Dragon 4 was officially announced by BioWare only a few years ago. BioWare has been keeping its cards pretty close to the chest ever since. Neither a release date nor a release window have been announced.
The platforms have not yet been officially confirmed. Given that the release date seems far away and the Gamescom 2020 clip mentions “next-gen tech”, it’s likely that Dragon Age 4: Direwolf will skip PS4 and Xbox One, going instead to PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.

In-game video
In December 2022, BioWare released a cutscene of the game Wolf from Dragon Age. In the trailer, we hear fan-favorite bard Varric Tethras telling the story of the Dire Wolf, or to use his mortal form’s name: Solas. In his story, Varric tells us how Solas separated the Void (the realm of magic) from reality by creating a Veil between them.
Unfortunately, it looks like Solas has ideas to tear down the Veil, destroy the world, and usher in the apocalypse. Moreover, it seems that “only we can stop him.”

Dragon Age 4: Dreadwolf’s story and setting
BioWare has not confirmed the exact plot Dragon Age: Direwolf just yet, but this title and game trailer make one thing clear: Solas will be involved in some way. This time as the main antagonist. Now we’ve put together a guide on exactly who Solas is for those who want to go into detail, but suffice it to say that he’s a shadowy figure who made a strong impression in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
This is BioWare description (opens in a new tab) about him: “Solas, Dire Wolf. Some say he may be an ancient elven god, but some say he isn’t. Others say a traitor to his people… or a savior who now seeks to save him at the cost of your world. His motives are impenetrable and his methods sometimes questionable, which has earned him a reputation as something of a trickster deity – a player of dark and dangerous games.”
Intriguing, right? The return of Solas, as well as characters like Varric, certainly suggests that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf the story begins shortly after Dragon Age: Inquisition. However, as with all previous games in the series, players will take on the role of a brand new hero, with the official website stating “Thedas needs a new hero; one they will never see.
New heroes and fresh beginnings make sequels accessible. We also know that playing Dragon Age: Inquisition won’t be a prerequisite for getting stuck in Dragon Age: Direwolfas is the case with BioWare confirmed (opens in a new tab) that “if you’re new to Dragon Age, you don’t have to worry that you haven’t met our antagonist yet. He’ll actually introduce himself when the time is right.”

Alpha milestone reached
In the latest Age of the Dragon 4 A blog update, published in October 2022, GM Gary McKay revealed that the game has reached the alpha milestone, meaning it is now playable from start to finish. But the game is “not finished by any means” and the studio is now focusing on fine-tuning the narrative and gameplay features.
“First of all, we can now focus on bringing visual fidelity to its final form and iterating gameplay features,” McKay wrote in a blog post. “The big question is, ‘Where are we focusing our efforts?’ To answer this question, we’re asking for feedback from multiple sources, including Community Council members who all have different perspectives and experiences, our QA team, and extensive internal testing of the game. Collecting feedback from multiple sources gives us the best insight into where we need to spend more time improving the experience.
“Additionally, we can now evaluate the pace of the game, how the relationship evolves over time, the player’s progression, and also the consistency of the narrative – basically how the story comes together. We can take the story we’ve written and see if we’re expressing it well through characters, dialogue, cutscenes, and ultimately the player’s journey. Now that we have the ability to run a complete game, we can iterate and refine the things that matter most to our fans.
